ORGY OF ABSTINENCE

Acrylic on canvas
152 x 91.5 cm

In this painting we have a solitary monk depicted in the tenebrist style strongly influenced by Gherardo delle Notti e Bernardo Strozzi, trying to find a justification in the bible for his cruel abstention. Just a little doubt slipped into his mind and a trickle of suspicion into his bloodstream. He clearly feels his solitude enlarge, while he faces a hidden dead end. He feels within himself an acrid taste of death and nothingness, which burns like a powerful poison. It is a diabolical propensity for self-torture, that is asked of him. He leans against a stick that, with all probability, used to be a cross. He is victim of his own probity, a fanatic to the limits of absurdity, seduced by the Holy Church. It seems, however, that he can’t extinguish his own ardour. His mind is torn between nectar and cyanide. Yes, his mind has been tainted by scepticism. Will he escape from his splendid blindness? Or will he be doomed to insignificance, just brooding over his degraded virtues. Will he be released from his chains of superstition, and his metaphysical straight jacket? He seems to wander the back alleys of paradise, where nothing exists to be saved. There’s no more need for his religious safety-box, he exists only to be drawn into the slow and endless swirling of life’s mutations. Will this be his moment?
