AMA NESCIRI

Acrylic on canvas
90cm x 122cm (+2cm tray frame)

Ama nesciri, ‘Love to be unknown’, from the “Imitation of Christ” by Thomas à Kempis. The main theme of it is the concept of self-renunciation. We are happy with ourselves and with the world only when we conform to this precept. It puts the emphasis on the interior life and withdrawal from the world, as opposed to an active imitation of Christ by other friars. Our collective unconscious represented by the lady on the right is finding it quite hard to believe in quietism when the new God called social media is flourishing by promoting the exact opposite of what Thomas à Kempis believed in.
