SENTIO INFIRMUM ERGO SUM

I FEEL SICK THEREFORE I AM. It is not death but life which is the great unknown. The revelation of death’s immanence in life occurs during illness and depressive states. Life is death’s prisoner, right? Sickness makes death ever present. If illnesses have a philosophical mission in the universe, then it can only be to prove how illusory the feeling of life is. In illness, death is always alive. Genuine illnesses link us to metaphysical realities which the healthy man cannot understand. All illnesses are quite heroic. Yes, they are, but with a different heroism, a heroism of resistance, not of conquest. The heroism of illnesses defends life’s last redoubts. Depressive states in which separation from the world steadily and painfully increases, bring man closer to his inner reality and cause him to discover death in its own subjectivity. Whoever is contemptuous of illness cannot speak of spirit. Illness related inspiration springs from the irrational depths of our being, from a secret centre of subjectivity. Illness delights in the barbaric and spontaneous spirit of inspiration, that makes inspiration the only reality of creation. Yes, during illness you feel the monotony of a cemetery, a glacial solitude, and a heightened consciousness of death. Only sickness gives birth to serious and deep feelings. Consequently, whatever is not born out of sickness has only aesthetic value. Well, if all these beautiful nurses won’t make Man feel better, then there’s no hope, right? Maybe Man doesn’t want to get better? Maybe Man is afraid of losing his own existence, right?
